Parking Protected
Bike Lanes on Seaport Boulevard

Sources: NATCO, City of Boston Transportation Department

    • Reduces risk of ‘dooring’ compared to conventional bike lanes

    • Dedicates and protects space for bicyclists in order to improve perceived comfort and safety

    • Eliminates risk and fear of collisions with over-taking vehicles

    • May help prevent double parking, unlike a bike lane

    • Have been found to be more attractive for bicyclists of all levels and ages

  • For Bicyclists:

    • Obey all traffic laws – stop for red lights and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks

    • Use extra care when riding through intersections and mixing zones

    For Motorists:

    • Unless otherwise signed, all parking rules remain in effect, including parking meter fees and resident permit parking

    • Do not park on the buffer zone

    • Use care when exiting vehicles and crossing the bike lane to the sidewalk

How to safely navigate in a parking protected bicycle lane

Over the last few years the TMA has really stepped things up: advocating and following through on improved bike infrastructure (most notably protected bike lanes throughout the Seaport); ...free bike lights and other safety gear; and the weekly bike tune ups by Landry’s professional mechanics to keep everyone’s bikes running smoothly. These programs have gone a long way to get more people out of their cars and onto bikes!
